Lighting Trends For 2017

New year means a slew of new products for the home. We’ve noticed a few trends in the industry this last year for lighting that are making huge differences in homes and commercial spaces. Here are some of our favorite new products that not only save you money and energy, but are sleek representations of where the industry is headed in the future:

LED Tape Lighting

This is one of our most used products on the job site. LED tape lighting is very versatile and popular since it can be used in both residential and commercial settings. We love how you can customize them, whether that be remote controlled, dimming settings, or color changing. Some creative uses include over cabinet lighting, toe kick lighting, or accent lighting for niches and other home features. Best of all: they’re energy efficient. Price ranges vary, but there are plenty of good quality affordable options out there.

Led Light Bulbs

If you haven’t already made the switch, 2017 is the year to do it. Efficiency for your home, plus they don’t put off heat. Switch out your bulbs to reduce your energy usages and see what a difference it can make.

Programmable Thermostats

These have to be the most ingenious creations for the home: remotely controlling the temperature of your home from your phone. No more surprising heating bills from having the heat too high while you’re at the office, or when you get home from a long vacation. You may be familiar with the brand Nest, which has learning technology that adapts to your preferences. After using it for just a week, it will program itself to your customized settings. The company also offers smoke alarm systems and indoor/outdoor surveillance cameras that can link to your personal cell phone.  Here at Tork Electric, we are installing more and more of these in new homes and now they come in a range of finishes. I want one in copper!

Animated Lighting Controls

Unlike earlier models, these are becoming very mainstream and affordable. Imagine being able to program or dim your lights with your cell phone no matter where you are. These systems used to be considered high end and only found in expensive custom homes, but are now affordable for every homeowner.  I can name a few electricians that like to mess with their wives when they’re home alone by dimming the lights.

Snap Power

This is a company you’re going to want to keep an eye on. They create come amazingly convenient items, like outlets covers that have LED nightlights built into them. No more awkward nightlights taking up outlet space! Some of their outlet covers even have USB ports built it for charging cell phones and other handheld devices, again freeing up an outlet for other uses. Bonus point: these are items that you can install yourselves! Just be sure to turn the power off first and be sure to give us a call if you need any assistance.
